Brutal Burning of Adivasi Houses in Narmada District
2004-09-14
Forest and police officials burnt down houses of adivasi families in the Bhorda Hamlet of Vadgam on 9 September.
These are poor adivasi dam-ousted families who have returned from the rehabilitation villages for various compelling reasons, but mainly because of the poor quality of land allotted to them. On September 6, five houses of poor adivasi families were also burnt down. Other families were warned that if they did not leave the village within 4 days, their houses would also be burned. The returnees of Gadher village (more than 60 families) were also given similar ultimatums.
Such human rights violations must be stopped immediately.
